One Year Later- A Poem

One Year Later

The amount of things that can happen within a year

Are innumerable and enough to fill many ears

Some are good and some are bad

And some make us happy and glad

Others make us regretful, full of shame

Others add praise to the U.S. name

Others bring tears to one’s eyes

Others reveal people’s tribulations and tries

But one event stands out from the others

It involves grieving friends and mothers

It involves a tragedy so horrifying

That its retelling leaves people crying

And whose anniversary has just past

One year later at last

One year later full of suffering and pain

One year later full of recovery and gain

I speak of the event when six souls went to heaven

January 8th, 2011

While the one year anniversary has just passed

The sorrow and images have managed to last

In honor of this solemn day

Bells were rung throughout Tucson and memorials held in every which way

There was a public memorial held downtown

And people from all around

Senators, governors, musicians, and supporters

All came together on the U of A quarters

The crowd was filled with glow sticks and light

That brightened our spirits and the night

We heard some music from a Tucson band

And saw a candle lighting by hand

So, now, one year later as a nation

A year full of fundraising and dedication

We remember what happened but a short year ago

What at the time was a confusing furrago

We remember how Tucson came together

Came together, for the better
