Mock Trial Part 2: Senior Edition
Mock Trial Part 2: Senior Edition
By Daniela Nuñez and Karen Wang
After the success of our first interview with Mock Trial’s Blue Team, we decided to have a chat with the Vice President of Mock Trial, Fernanda Velasco, to discuss the legacy and achievements of the club (amongst other things).
Q: How long have you been in Mock Trial, and what would you say your favorite aspect of the club is?
A: I’ve only been involved in Mock Trial for 2 years, but other officers – like the President Marisa Arellano – have been in the club for all 4 years. I would say going to competition is one of my favorite aspects. It just changes you, and it puts your strengths to the test and you get to see all your hard work come to life!
Q: Can you tell us anything about the history or legacy of Mock Trial?
A: The club has won tons of trophies, something around 6 or 7. As far as State goes, it’s always been the customary rivalry between ASA (a high school located inPhoenix) and UHS. The club has accomplished a lot, but it’s only because we realized from an early stage that team effort is better for everyone.
Q: How has the club dynamic changed of the years?
A: In the past the club has always been somewhat small, but last year a new influx of freshman (now sophomores) joined and the club had to rearrange all the teams! The new members are great though, and they balance out all the teams. We know that the club will be in good hands after we leave.
Q: Has Mock Trial influenced you or any plans you might have?
A: Yes! Mock Trial has definitely had a big influence on my choices, especially college wise. Before I joined I wasn’t certain if I wanted to become a lawyer, since it seemed somewhat tedious, but after I joined Mock Trial I realized how fun it was and how much my hard work really pays off. The current President Marisa Arellano told me that I would like Mock Trial; if it wasn’t for her I might have never joined this wonderful club!
Q: Do you have any advice for any future Mock Trial-ers?
A: I think it’s important to realize that joining a club will only be beneficial and enjoyable if you participate. I don’t suggest that you join Mock Trial – or any other club for that matter – because it will look good on a résumé, you should join because you want to be part of a team. Mock Trial is one of those clubs that’s almost like another class, you have to practice if you want to get really good and we have meetings very often, so it’s easy to get behind. It’s a real commitment, but it’s also a lot of fun!
