Verdant

We painted my mom’s room Green:

Doing it for the calming properties,

Or so we heard as we mostly watched

Home & Garden Televisions’

Googolplex of nameless interior decorators

On Cable on a Sunday Evening.

In Vietnam,

They painted the soldiers’ faces Green:

Green to match their uniforms

That matched the grass

That matched the palm trees.

Lining up almost

Perfectly

With the color of God’s face

When she discovered in creating Man–

She had created War.

With his pen,

Frank L. Baum painted the Wicked Witch Green

Shoving the remains of a possible personality

Into a Silver trash can.

Sick of seeing Red and Blue everywhere,

Al Gore painted politics Green,

Representing photosynthesis

And Christmas trees,

And convenient truths.

“Money makes the world go round.”

So does Envy,

And Carbon Dioxide.

We painted my mom’s room Green:
We had no reason

Except for that it matched her eyes.
