Tree Planting Project Summary

Summary of the Rincon/UHS Tree Planting Project

By Special Parent Contributor Becky Vance

The RUHS Campus Projects and Beautification Committee would like to thank everyone who made this year’s tree planning project possible! All of the work has been completed, so we thought you might want to know what was accomplished. In addition to everyone who came out to plant trees, we had an enthusiastic group of students who painted the parking curbs in the north lot. Without the exceptional administrators, teachers, students, and parents at RUHS, none of this would be possible!

How was the project funded?

$1500 in parent donations. Thanks to everyone who made a contribution!

Schoolyard Grant from the Watershed Management Group, Inc. Thanks WMG!

Special thanks to Chris Webb, UHS parent and landscape foreman, who helped with the purchase of trees and staking materials, arranged for the backhoe operator, and supervised the dig. We appreciate your time and expertise!

When did the project take place?

Saturday, March 3: basins carved out; tree holes dug

Sunday, March 4: WMG Water Harvesting Workshop for 30 students and parents

17 trees planted, basins shaped, shrubs and grasses planted

curbs in north lot painted

Saturday, March 24: 11 remaining trees planted

Ongoing watering by RUHS teachers and students until plants are established Thanks to everyone who is helping with this!

What tree varieties were planted and where were they planted?

We planted several drought tolerant trees including mesquites, palo verdes, ironwoods, and Chinese pistache along with a variety of shrubs and grasses

Trees were planted in the area between the science classrooms and auditorium, in the main courtyard, and in the east parking lot medians, all areas in great need of shade!

Who helped plant the trees and paint the curbs?

Administrators: Ms. Moll, Mrs. Comstock, Mr. Cota-Robles

UHS Environmental Sciences teacher Dr.Tobin. Dr. Tobin was involved in all aspects of the planning and implementation of this project. Special thanks to you Dr. Tobin!

Watershed Management Group’s Tory Syracuse and Adam Schwartz RUHS teachers, students, parents, and family members listed below
