University High School Team Wins Arizona Economics Challenge

Teams from University High School won first and second place in the Arizona Economics Challenge, Adam Smith Division in Phoenix on Saturday, April 14, beating two Basis teams in the state finals. The academic competition tests students’ knowledge of microeconomics, macroeconomics and international economics. Following several rounds of written tests, the top two teams—both from University High—faced off in a final quiz bowl-style round of questions. The winning team received a trophy and $200.00; the second-place team won trophies and $100.00. Basis Charter School teams took third and fourth place in the competition.

The first place team will go on to compete in the National Economics Challenge Semi-final round, where they will try to qualify for the National Economics Challenge Finals in New York.

First place team members are William Lee, Kyle Saxberg, Brooke Teufel and Jimmy Yao. The second place team members include Maren Bailey, Jose Hernandez, Yurika Isoe and Collin Stewart.

In the David Ricardo division, University High School students won second place, behind first place Basis Charter School. The University High team members from the David Ricardo division were Paul Hein, Ethan Manninen, Alex Mercer and Laurence Wolf.
