Mr. Hilbert – UHS’s Newest Member of the English Department

Meet Mr. Hilbert – UHS’ newest member of the English department. Mr. Hilbert is currently teaching freshman and junior English, and, while new, is already excited and looking forward to becoming part of the Penguin family. In an interview with Mr. Hilbert, I learned about this new teacher’s passions, summer adventures and goals as a new teacher here at UHS.

Q: Why did you become a teacher?

A: I feel like I can have a bigger impact as a teacher on my local community than by doing anything else.

Q: What were you doing before you came to work at UHS?

A: I was a vagabond, roaming the world in search of culture, experience, and natural beauty.

Q: What were you doing before you were a teacher?

A: I was a relationship manager and credit analyst at a commercial bank back east. It was great. I loved it, I was good at it, but then I went to Micronesia.

Q: How has your experience of teaching in Micronesia influenced the teacher you are today?

A: The experience of teaching Micronesia was tailor made for me –  it really provided the spark that ignited the fire burning inside of me today to teach. In all honesty, I didn’t expect to continue teaching after my first year there. But when I came home, nothing was challenging enough for me, nothing was productive enough for me, nothing seemed to matter as much as teaching. And now, for the 10-12 hours or so I am at school every day, teaching means everything to me.

Q: What do you like to do when you’re not teaching?

A: Climb mountains.

Q: What was the best thing you did this summer?

A: Got married!

Q: What do you hope to achieve as a teacher here at UHS? Would you consider being involved in any committees or being involved in/starting any clubs?

A: I hope to be the best teacher I can be this year as I acclimate to the UHS culture and new curricula. In future years, I hope to start an adventure club and work with students on their extracurricular language arts (speaking, listening, writing, reading) interests.
